The very last stage of WRC newcomer Rally Poland – which was an immediate hit – saw the consistent run of Dani Sordo and Marc Marti rewarded with second place. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena's concluded their fight-back by finishing seventh overall, while Citroën has succeeded in extending its lead at the top of the provisional World Rally Championship standings.

BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen took the lead in the FIA World Rally Championship today after winning Rally Poland in a Focus RS World Rally Car. It was Ford's third straight victory following wins in Italy and Greece and Hirvonen now heads the drivers' standings by one point with four rounds remaining.

BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team maintained its grip on first and second places during the second leg of Rally Poland today. Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen hold a 12.0sec lead over team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, both in Ford Focus RS World Rally Cars, after a another day of incredible high-speed action through the countryside of north-east Poland.

Pole position for Ford as Hirvonen and Latvala shine in Poland

BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team won all six of today's speed tests to hold first and second after the opening leg of Rally Poland. Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen established themselves at the head of the leaderboard this morning in their Ford Focus RS World Rally Car and remained there throughout the day to build an overnight lead of 8.9sec. Team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila are second in a similar car, both pairings winning three special stages each.

HIRVONEN WINS IN GREECE AS FORD CLAIMS LANDMARK VICTORY

Acropolis Rally of Greece
Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen won the Acropolis Rally of Greece today to secure Ford's 70th world rally victory. The Finns won this seventh round of the FIA World Rally Championship, the toughest encounter in the 12-event series, by 1min 12.9sec in their Ford Focus RS World Rally Car. BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team colleagues Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila were third in another Focus RS WRC to secure maximum points in the manufacturers' series for the Blue Oval.

Three C4s in the top five for the Citroen Junior Team

Having proved their performance yesterday, the Citroën Junior Team demonstrated its consistency throughout the second day of the Acropolis Rally of Greece, with young French stars Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia holding second in the overall provisional classification. Russian youngster Evegny Novikov and his Australian co-driver Dale Moscatt were the best performers of the day, setting three more fastest times and occupying fourth place. Zimbabwe's Conrad Rautenbach and British co-driver Daniel Baritt are fifth.

Day 2 of the Acropolis Rally of Greece proved just as tough as the teams had feared. On the first special stage of the day, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena were forced to retire after going off. Two stages later, it was the turn of Dani Sordo and Marc Marti to get caught out. The Spanish pairing will restart tomorrow under the SupeRally ruling to try to score Manufacturers’ points.

Finland's Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen increased their lead in the Acropolis Rally of Greece today during a dramatic second leg. On a day of remarkable attrition, the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team drivers steered clear of trouble in their Focus RS World Rally Car to extend their advantage to 1min 40.1sec. Team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila also kept their cool in the Greek heat to charge up the leaderboard from 11th to third in a similar car.

The Citroën Junior Team continues to make progress. On the first day of the Acropolis Rally of Greece, the Citroën Junior Team won two special stages thanks to Evgeny Novikov / Dale Moscatt and Sébastien Ogier / Julien Ingrassia. The Russian therefore becomes the youngest driver in the history of the WRC to set a fastest stage time !

The opening day of the 2009 Acropolis Rally took competitors to the challenging stages along the flanks of the towering Mount Parnassus. Dani Sordo and Sébastien Loeb completed the leg in second and third places overall and are in a strong position for the rest of the event.

BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team led throughout today's opening leg of the Acropolis Rally of Greece. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila topped the leaderboard in their record-breaking Ford Focus RS World Rally Car for most of the sun-drenched day in the mountains north-west of Athens. When the Finns dropped time during the final speed test, team-mates and fellow countrymen Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen moved to the front to end the day with a 3.0sec advantage.

BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team journeys to the toughest round of the FIA World Rally Championship in Greece next week intent on building on last month's one-two finish in Italy and extending its excellent record on one of the series' classic fixtures. The Acropolis Rally of Greece (11 - 14 June) is round seven of the championship and marks the beginning of the second half of the 12-round campaign.
